In this Washington Post business news story about Obama's coming visit to down and out Ottumwa:
Town leaders have tried everything to attract employers and rejuvenate the town, even raising money to open a Video Game Hall of Fame, envisioning a sort of Midwestern Cooperstown.
Yet unemployment remains at 9.5 percent, and the median family income is around $30,000. More than half of public-school children here qualify for free or reduced-cost lunches. The downtown is desolate, with a perky coffee shop here, a lively comic book shop there and lots of papered-over glass in between.
Perhaps not the best context, but still. Such are Walter's promotional powers that he's only bright spot in the dreary scene. I recently got a note from Walter alerting me that the "International Video Game Hall of Fame & Museum (IVGHOF) is" -- finally! -- "registered with the IRS as a 501(c)3 Not-for-Profit, Tax-Exempt organization." The induction ceremony is August 7. I wish I could be there. Maybe Obama's visit will give the IVGHOF a boost. Look for Walter on the local news during the state visit. I wouldn't be surprised if he's sending press releases to the White House right now...
